Summer Pond
In late afternoon on
April 10, I walked to Summer Pond from the trailhead on Pine
Tree Drive. As I approached the observation platform, I could
see numerous birds wading in the shallow pond (tides were very
low on April 10). I took photos from the perspective of a
first-time visitor, using the picture key on the Wading Bird
panel to identify the large white birds as Great Egret and
similar but smaller white birds as Snowy Egret. This, of
course, was the idea behind the design and construction of the
observation platform and interpretive panel, as well as the
trailhead for public access. It is my hope, on Earth Day, that
others will experience the beauty of Summer Pond and appreciate
its value in sustaining the extraordinary birdlife of Florida.

The trail to Summer Pond begins in the parking area on Pine Tree
Drive. The path was cleared and brushed by Matt
Blackwelder and his crew to fulfill Matt's requirement for Eagle
Scout. The wooden foot bridge on the trail was built by
Nathaniel Petersen as his Eagle Scout project. Kathy
Muniz, a graphic artist from Ormond-by-the-Sea volunteered her
skills to create the interpretive sign at the trailhead.
Charley DuToit, retired TSP biologist, identified the site for
the platform. Park Manager, Benny Woodham, designated
funds from an award given to the park for outstanding work done
by Mr. DuToit to purchase the educational sign on the platform.
Joe Isaacs, Tomoka State Park ranger, and his son Justin built
the frames for both signs. Bob North, retired engineer,
drew the plans for the platform which was built by AmeriCorp
enlistees. Funding for building materials was provided by
Halifax River Audubon. Sincere thanks to all the
volunteers who made this project a reality to allow residents
and visitors a safe place to observe our natural areas. |
