Tomoka Bird Banding Station

Tomoka Bird Banding Station, located on a spoil island within Tomoka State Park, has been in operation since October 2004.  Tomoka State Park is located on North Beach Street between the Halifax and Tomoka Rivers in Ormond Beach, Florida.  The days and hours vary but are much more frequent during Fall and Spring migrations.  VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

Please Contact Meret Wilson at mileybug@aol.com for days and hours of operation.  Meret is a Federal, State and locally licensed bander.  She is holding a recently banded Northern Cardinal at the right.

Activities:  March 17-20, 2008

The winds were high and the rain was fierce on Thursday so Monday (3/17/08) was the only day I banded.  I caught only one bird, a recaptured Gray Catbird (GRCA) that was originally banded on 3-14-08.  As for birding the area, the species count was low both in the trees and in the skies.  Nets open: 4 hours.  Birds: 1.

Next week does not promise to be too good either.  I have some wet nets that need to be hung tomorrow and the wind will be helpful in getting them dried out quickly.  Tuesday is going to be very cold all day with a low of 44.  So, Weds and Thurs seem to be my best bets for catching anything this week.  Maybe the NNW winds will blow in a surprise.  But, so far we are not getting the winds needed to bring in the migrants.  I keep watching RADAR in hopes of a major change.  Be patient.  They will come!
