Well, as warned, we found our
first Pygmy Rattlesnake today,
just off the path as we walked
towards one of the nets. I am
actually glad to have come
across it so I know exactly what
it looks like in the environment
I am inhabiting...its! It
snapped it's head a couple of
times and shook its tail but
that was inaudible. We went on
and when we came back to the
same spot it was long gone, just
crossing the same path as ours.
On to birds. The first week was
more surprising. Being in a new
area I really do not know what
to expect yet. The usual local
birds we were catching down in
TSP are here in Bulow Creek
State Park. And we did catch a
cardinal, titmouse and several
wrens. The biggest surprise was
a Black-throated Blue Warbler,
the earliest I have ever caught
one in this my 8th season.
Today I caught an Ovenbird
loaded with fat on its breast
ready to continue its
migration. Of course there will
be no recaptures of my own
banded birds, but I can't wait
to see if I catch anyone else's.
