Hontoon Island State Park

Date:
10/7/2020 at 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Event Description

Hontoon Island is located on the St Johns River. Target species for this trip will be neo-tropical migrants (WARBLERS! and more). We will meet in the parking lot west and south of Deland and board the ferry that will transport us across the river to the island. The ferry is restricted to 3 or 4 people at a time and face coverings are required. Once on the island we will hike along the trails to see what we might find. Carry anything that you may need for a morning walk - snacks, water, sunscreen, hat, hand sanitizer, masks, long sleeved shirt, proper footwear, insect repellant. We will hike 3 miles or more.Trails may be wet at times. This is a strenuous outing.

** Update on trail conditions: Hiked the trails on Monday, October 5. Portions of some trails are totally submerged. Water may come over ankles. Higher boots are recommended. Most of the trails we will walk will have puddles. We may have to back track in some areas to reach prime birding spots.

Please follow our field trip guidelines by clicking the link. We will require that you sign a waiver before joining the trip. Forms are available online and at check in. Also, check the state park link below for current conditions and restrictions at the park.
